Stowmarket Town Council owns Stowmarket Recreation Ground, a pleasant popular public park surrounded by trees, close to the centre of town. "The Rec" as it is known has recently undergone various improvements, including the installation of a new play area, skatepark, ballpark and CCTV camera at the start of 2011. It is a well used area, popular with dog walkers and as a meeting place for young people. The Rec is also the venue for the long running Stowmarket Carnival as well as other community events.
The impressive Memorial Gates on the Recreation Ground entrance were erected in memory of those who lost their lives during the wars and still play a very important part in Civic events, such as Remembrance Day as well as being a focal point of the ground. The Memorial Fountain - which is located close to the memorial gates - was installed at the Recreation Ground in 1920 "in memory of those old scholars who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, 1914-1918" (taken from the inscription on the fountain). The fountain had been tucked away in a corner of the Recreation Ground for many years until 2007 when it was shot blasted and repainted before being relocated to it's original home in front of the Memorial Gates.
