Stowmarket is a medium sized market town in Suffolk,
East Anglia. The town lies on the A14 corridor
approximately equidistant between Suffolks main
towns of Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds.
Stowmarket is a quintessential English town with
a population of approximately 16,000 inhabitants
and surrounded by some of Suffolks most picturesque
villages and scenery.
The town was granted a market charter by Edward
III in 1347 and a popular traders market has operated
ever since. Today the market operates on Thursdays
and Saturdays selling a range of locally produced
goods.
The town is fortunate to have a good mix of both
large and small companies operating within it.
Large national companies including Muntons, ICI
and Bosch provide a stable source of employment
and income for the towns people whilst smaller
companies operating within the town allow Stowmarket
to keep its rural identity and community spirit.
The Town Council (who run this website) has operated
as it is today since 1974. Prior to which it operated
under the guise of the Urban District Council.
