Stowmarket has a wide reaching network of footpaths
many of which make up some quite substantial distance
treks. As well as taking in the rich countryside
environment, these walks run along historical paths
and take you from the heart of Stowmarket to the
beauty of its surrounding villages and countryside.
Mid-Suffolk Footpath:
This long-distance footpath links the town of
Hoxne with Stowmarket. This walk starts at Green's
Meadow Picnic Site and stretches for over twenty
miles through the spectacular scenery of the heart
of Suffolk. The lengthy walk will take you through
several villages which include Thorndon and Mendlesham
and the town of Eye.
Gipping Valley
Footpath:
Another rather lengthy jaunt for the keen walker,
the Gipping Valley Footpath covers 17 miles and
heads in the opposite direction to the Mid-Suffolk
walk above. This walk will take you from the centre
of Stowmarket through Needham Market and towards
Ipswich, concluding at the Ipswich Docks. Shorter
circular walks are signposted from the footpath.
Middy Railway
Footpath:
One for the railway enthusiasts as well as keen
walkers, this footpath will take you along the
route of the old Mid-Suffolk Railway. Starting
from the Silo building in nearby Haughley, the
walk follows the old railway route and concludes
at the Brockford Railway Museum.
A Walk Around
Stowmarket:
A Walk Around Stowmarket is an informal walk intended
to illustrate a little of Stowmarket's history and
character. A fairly level and easy route follows
roads and footpaths around the town. Usual duration
of the walk is approximately 1 hour.
