The Town Council is undertaking a project to regenerate the Old Cemetery, Bury Road. The Old Cemetery dates back to the middle of the 19th Century and the first burial that took place was that of Mary Ann Stevens on the 15th August 1855.
The Old Cemetery contains two Chapels, one Consecrated and one Unconsecrated which would have catered for the religious denominations during the 18th and 19th Century.
The last burial in the Old Cemetery took place around 1901 and it was at this point that it was closed.
There is a range of different habitats in the Old Cemetery, all of which are important for wildlife and the Cemetery has over the years become a haven for many species.
The Old Cemetery is a charming place, a calm oasis in the middle of a busy built up area and the Town Council is taking steps to preserve and enhance this very special site.
