The Town Council serves a population of approximately 19,000 people in three wards, is made up of 15 elected members backed up by a staff of over 30. We are based at Milton House, Milton Road South, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 1EZ.

Mission Statement

“As an evolving Town Council we promote the social, economic and environmental well being of Stowmarket through the provision of quality services and facilities that are accessible to all. We work with our residents, other local authorities, businesses and community organisations to achieve a safe, healthy and prosperous community. We work with residents to have more say over the town environment in which they live”.
 
Aims

To provide services and facilities that meets the needs and expectations of our residents and visitors.

To constantly strive to improve the town's services and environment by working with our partner organisations.

To promote the economic and social development of Stowmarket by encouraging local enterprise and by levering in external funding.

To be a strong advocate for the views of our townspeople, traders and visitors.

To involve the townspeople and organisations in all future developments.
To be a good and fair employer by providing fulfilling work opportunities and conditions for our staff and in so doing recognising their importance to the Town Council.
To ensure sound financial management of the Town Council resources through Member and officer involvement.
To provide every opportunity to assist Councillors to play their part in Town Council affairs including through the provision of learning and development.
 
Objectives
  • To promote a sense of community by ensuring that all townspeople, especially new residents and young people, know about and value Stowmarket organisations and facilities.
 
  • To promote and develop Town Council-owned and other public facilities that meets the needs of users.
 
  • To improve our services to the public by encouraging Members and staff to develop their skills through appropriate training towards common goals and to demonstrate the highest standards of public conduct.
 
  • To implement a plan to introduce sustainability to all activity of the Town Council.
 
  • To promote the markets and business opportunities in the town.
 
  • To increase the number of specialist and foreign markets.
 
  • To fulfil the business plan for the Regal Theatre
 
  • To play an active role in the planning structure ensuring that essential services and facilities are properly considered.
 
  • To ensure establishment of adequate financial reserves through Member and officer involvement.
 
  • To actively promote the regeneration, heritage and expansion projects within the town.
 
  • To continuously promote public participation in all Town Council meetings and initiatives.
 
  • To regularly assess risks facing the Town Council by Member and officer involvement.
 
  • To comply with the Disability Discrimination Act in respect of all Town Council public premises and services.
 
  • To retain the Investors in People status
 
  • To retain Quality Town Council status
 
  • To keep the Council tax rate at an affordable level
 
  • To keep Town Council premises condition in line with the building maintenance programme
 
  • To review all functions of the Town Council over five years as part of the Best Value process
 
  • To be recognised for Stowmarket’s floral displays
 
  • To provide office premises that meets the needs of the Town Council
