The Recreation Ground
Stowmarket Town Council are responsible for the Recreation Ground, a popular public park close to the centre of town. "The Rec" as it is known is a well used area; as well as being used on a daily basis, particularly as a meeting place for young people and by dog walkers, The Rec is the venue for several key events, the biggest being The Town Council's annual music festival, StowFest and the long running Stowmarket Carnival.

New skatepark plans coming to fruition
The Town Council have been working with Skaters of Stow and Mid Suffolk District Council on a plan to install a new skatepark at the Recreation Ground. Funding has now been secured, a design has been finalised, contractors have been appointed and we will shortly be applying for planning permission. The skatepark will be installed by Gravity Parks and will consist of a fantasitc concrete bowl style design with a wide range of features to suit all standards of skater. The skatepark is just one part of a significant plan to improve play provision at the Recreation Ground. Keep checking back for updates.

Play Areas
The Town Council own six play areas in Stowmarket:

* The Recreation Ground
* Chilton Fields
* Hill Rise
* Lindsey Way
* Melford Road
* St Edmunds Road

It is widely recognised that the play equipment on all of these sites requires upgrading. The Town Council recently conducted a survey of all young people in the town, with the kind help of the town's schools, to find out what kind of equipment they would like on the play areas. This information is being collated and the results will be used to identify priority sites and the type of equipment that we should install.

It is anticipated that all the sites will be upgraded over a five year period between 2009 and 2014. Play equipment is extremely expensive so it is not possible to upgrade all sites immediately. However, the Council are actively exploring sources of funding to help pay for new equipment and if funding can be secured, this should help to speed the process up considerably.

If you have any queries regarding any of the recreational areas, please contact Daniel Harvey, Public Services Manager, on 01449 612060 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
